About the course
Teaching and Learning Vocabulary through AI is a course designed for students who seek to develop a principled and practical understanding of vocabulary instruction in the age of artificial intelligence. Grounded in key theories of second language vocabulary acquisition, the course examines how learners acquire, store, and use lexical knowledge, and how teachers can design effective instructional interventions to support this process.

The course is structured around the ADDIE instructional design model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation), guiding students systematically through the process of planning, delivering, and refining vocabulary lessons. Students learn to conduct needs analysis, formulate learning objectives, design sequenced tasks, develop instructional materials, and create appropriate assessment tools for diverse EFL contexts.

A central feature of the course is the integration of AI tools, particularly generative AI such as ChatGPT, as pedagogical resources for lesson planning, material development, and reflective practice. Through hands-on projects and guided experimentation, students critically evaluate the affordances and limitations of AI in language education, learning to use these tools not as replacements for teachers, but as intelligent assistants that support informed pedagogical decision-making.
The course culminates in a series of micro-teaching practicums and an e-portfolio, allowing students to apply theory to practice in authentic teaching scenarios. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on reflective practice, data-informed instruction, and ethical considerations, preparing future language educators to adopt AI-enhanced pedagogy in a responsible, critical, and learner-centered manner.
